The Highlands Rail Trail opened this week in Wanaque. This is only the first phase of the $3.4 million project. The two mile stretch that opened this week runs from Union Avenue to F.A. Orechio Drive. It will be maintained by Passaic County and Wanaque. The rail follows a rail bed that has been there for over a century. Back in the late 1800's the New York and Greenwood Lake Railway transported passengers and freight from Ringwood to Hoboken along the same rail bed. Officials say the new Highlands Rail Trail will serve as an alternative to busy Ringwood Avenue for bikers and walkers.
