The Arthur Kill is no place to get swept away by currents. Somehow a tiny dog fell into the Arthur Kill on Saturday. The tidal waterway is a major shipping lane for New York Harbor and Bayonne. Staten Island is on one side. New Jersey is on the other. While on patrol an alert officer with the New Jersey State Marine Police noticed a strange movement in the water near Elizabeth. The officers headed toward the movement and saw a young pup struggling against the current. Trooper Michael Buchell deployed a life ring and rescue blanket to bring the tiny dog aboard the patrol boat safely. By the time they got there the dog had managed to climb onto a jagged piling protruding from the water. At first he snarled and barked at the officers as they were trying to save him. Troopers named him "Oscar" after the Sesame Street character. He was suffering from hypothermia and exhaustion but is doing much better now. Trooper Buchell is taking care of him now. Hopefully, his owners will claim him. If not "Oscar" will be put up for adoption.
