I always associated Cinco de Mayo with Mexican Food and drinking. Yes, today is a day to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage. What I didn't know was the actual history behind why this day in particular is celebrated. The common belief is that May 5th is Mexican Independence Day. However, that is not what it is. Mexico was already an independent country when Napoleon III decided to invade the country in 1862. The French were trying to re-establish a colony in North America after the Louisiana Purchase. Napoleon saw Mexico as an easy target since the United States was unable to help during The Civil War. On May 5th 1862 Mexican Forces defeated the French in The Battle of Puebla. The French did go on to occupy Mexico for the next five years. The Mexican victory at Battle of Puebla is celebrated today because the Mexican forces were out numbered and not expected to win the battle. A proud moment in Mexico's history.
