A flood watch has been issued for Sussex, Warren, and Morris Counties in northwest New Jersey, effective from Friday evening (May 30) through Saturday morning. The National Weather Service warns of heavy rainfall, with rates of one to two inches per hour, potentially leading to flooding in rivers, creeks, streams, and low-lying areas. Total rainfall is expected to reach one to three inches over a six to twelve-hour period.
The rain is expected to begin late this evening and continue overnight. Excessive runoff may cause flooding in flood-prone areas, with creeks and streams possibly rising out of their banks. Residents in these areas should stay updated on forecasts and be prepared to act if flooding develops.
The National Weather Service advises those in flood-prone regions to seek higher ground, adhere to evacuation orders, and disconnect utilities and appliances if time permits. It is crucial to avoid walking or driving through floodwaters, as just six inches of fast-moving water can sweep a person off their feet, and twelve inches can carry away most vehicles.
For safety, avoid parking or walking near swollen waterways during heavy rain, and maintain a safe driving distance by adhering to the two-second rule, allowing extra time in heavy rain conditions.
Stay informed and prioritize safety as the weather conditions develop. For more information, refer to the National Weather Service's guidelines.
