One of the busiest runways at Newark Liberty International Airport is currently under construction, potentially leading to flight delays. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that the $121 million project, which began on April 15, includes repaving the runway, upgrading lighting, and improving drainage systems. The construction is expected to continue until mid-June.
During this period, flights are being redirected to two other runways at the airport. The affected runway, Runway 4L-22R, handles approximately 47% of Newark's flight activity. It was last paved in 2021. Port Authority spokesperson CherylAnn Albienz advised travelers to check with their airlines for any schedule changes due to the ongoing construction.
In addition to the runway work, travelers should be aware that the airport's AirTrain system will be shut down for maintenance from 8 p.m. on Saturday to 8 a.m. on Sunday. Free shuttle buses will be available as an alternative during this time.
The Port Authority encourages travelers to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys. The construction is part of a broader effort to maintain and improve the airport's infrastructure, ensuring safe and efficient operations for the future.
