Repairs on the I-80 bridges over Route 15 in Wharton will commence Wednesday night (April 9) as part of a two-week project aimed at addressing concrete deterioration and recent sinkhole issues. The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) initiated this project following public concern over a third sinkhole that emerged last month, which led to the closure of all lanes on the interstate.

According to NJ.com, the repairs are part of NJDOT's commitment to ensure the safety of the I-80 bridges, despite the recent structural issues. The department has assured the public that the bridges remain safe.

The sinkhole problems began when a depression was observed in the center lane of I-80 eastbound at Exit 34 in February. This prompted NJDOT to conduct soil tests, during which the roadway collapsed, revealing an 11-foot by 11-foot sinkhole. NJDOT crews stabilized the area and conducted further geotechnical tests to understand the subsurface conditions. A third sinkhole, measuring 15 by 15 feet, appeared in March, leading to the closure of additional lanes.

The department plans to reopen two westbound lanes by May 4 and two eastbound lanes by May 18, with the entire highway expected to reopen by June 25, depending on weather conditions and ongoing structural testing. NorthJersey.com reports that NJDOT is working closely with local officials and the New Jersey State Police to manage traffic and minimize disruptions.

Motorists are advised to use alternate routes such as Route 10 or Route 46 eastbound and to follow posted detours to avoid the closure zone. NJDOT continues to provide updates through digital signage and trucking alerts to keep drivers informed.
