Businesses in Wharton are gathering this afternoon (March 31) at the town hall to discuss the ongoing sinkhole repairs on Interstate 80 and their impact on local commerce. The meeting, scheduled for 5 p.m., aims to address how to support businesses affected by the construction and detours.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has been working to repair multiple sinkholes that have appeared on I-80 since December. The most recent sinkhole, which is 15 feet by 15 feet, was discovered in the median of the eastbound work zone on March 19. This led to the closure and detour of all lanes on I-80 westbound at Exit 34B/Route 15 northbound.

NJDOT is conducting drilling and grouting operations to stabilize the affected areas. According to NJDOT, two westbound lanes may reopen in five weeks if repairs proceed without issues. The eastbound lanes could follow two weeks later, reopening in seven weeks.

Senator Anthony M. Bucco noted that the final design for the repairs is expected to be completed soon, with crews working around the clock to expedite the process. Meanwhile, New Jersey Transit is offering a 50% discount on roundtrip travel for those impacted by the sinkholes.

Governor Phil Murphy declared a State of Emergency earlier this month to access federal funding for the repairs. NJDOT is also using digital messaging and online resources to keep the public informed about detours and traffic conditions.
