A Winter Storm Watch has been activated for the Poconos region, starting from four o'clock this afternoon and continuing until four o'clock Friday afternoon. The area is expected to receive between four to eight inches of snow, with higher accumulations anticipated in elevated areas. The heavy snowfall, coupled with strong winds, could potentially bring down tree limbs and power lines, leading to possible power outages.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is urging drivers to prepare for the adverse conditions and be ready for a potentially challenging morning commute tomorrow. In addition to treating roads with salt in preparation for the storm, PennDOT is implementing vehicle restrictions starting Thursday evening. Under Tier 1 restrictions, certain vehicles will be banned from driving on affected roadways, including Interstate 81 north of I-380 and the entire length of I-84.
PennLive reports that last winter, Pennsylvania saw 151 crashes resulting in three deaths and 55 injuries on snowy, slushy, or ice-covered roads. Aggressive driving behaviors, including speeding and careless lane changes, were contributing factors to these crashes.
PennDOT is advising drivers to pack an emergency kit and ensure their vehicles are ready to handle the conditions. The kit should include food, water, blankets, warm clothes, a cell phone charger, necessary medications, and baby/pet supplies. If drivers find themselves near an active snow plow, they are advised to maintain a safe distance.
