George W. Childs Park, a popular destination in the Poconos, is set to reopen on October 2, 2024, after being closed for six years due to extensive damage caused by winter storms in 2018. The park, located in Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, is known for its waterfalls, hiking trails, and mountain views.

The National Park Service announced the reopening, stating that the park has undergone significant restoration and improvement work. The park's trails, bridges, and other infrastructure have been repaired, and downed trees have been removed. In addition, an improved and expanded accessible portion of the trail has been added, and a short section of trail that was too damaged to repair has been removed and restored to natural conditions.

Park Superintendent Doyle Sapp said in a press release, "Though there have been a few changes to the site, like the improved and expanded accessible portion of the trail and the removal and restoration of a short section of trail that was too damaged to repair, returning visitors and first-time visitors alike will be greeted by a rustic trail system with perfectly situated bridges and viewing platforms that highlight 3 scenic waterfalls and the natural environment in which they are located, similar to what was originally envisioned by George W. Childs over a century ago."

The park will reopen to the public at noon on October 2, 2024, following a short opening ceremony. Visitors are reminded that swimming, jumping from the falls, and climbing on the rocks are prohibited. The park rangers also advise patience when visiting the newly reopened site, especially on weekends, as parking is limited.
